BP-2A Power Failure Transfer Unit

Overview

The BP-2A Power Failure Transfer Unit is designed to connect two-wire Central Office (CO) ground start trunk lines to selected station telephones in the event of a power failure or telecommunications system malfunction. The BP-2A includes automatic loop start to ground start conversion circuitry to provide the signaling required to draw CO dial tone when a station telephone is brought off-hook. This eliminates the need to add ground start push buttons to the station telephones. In the normal, non-transfer mode of operation, the BP-2A connects the CO trunk lines to trunk ports on the associated PBX system; PBX extension ports are connected to the station telephones.

BP-2A features include eight circuits of power failure transfer (PFT), delay transfer on each of the PFT circuits, LED status indicators, manual transfer switch, an auxiliary relay contact, return to normal mode delay timer, and universal powering. Also included are provisions for a normally open, normally closed, or logic level signal to control the operating mode.

System 920

PFT for T1
System 920 PFT for T1 Gordon Kapes, Inc.
The System 920 is a completely self-contained backup phone
system that extends the concept of power failure transfer (PFT)
to T1/DS1 circuits. The System 920 goes to work automatically
when normal operation of customer-premise-T1 equipment is
inhibited due to a power failure, software problem, or hardware
malfunction. When a failure or malfunction as such occurs, the
System 920 goes into transfer mode, taking control of the T1
circuit. Personnel at the site are able to continue to receive
inbound calls and to place outbound calls without interruption.
The System 920 is installed between customer-premise-T1
equipment and the network connection for the T1 circuit. It
combines the capabilities of a channel bank with integrated
CSU, an automatic call distributor (ACD), a 2-channel recorder/
announcer, and a 24-port “micro” PBX. (Note that the integrated
CSU is for use only by the System 920 and cannot serve as the
CPE CSU.)
The System 920 Basic Configuration Unit consists of a wallmounted
enclosure containing a CPU card, DS1 interface card,
power supply card, and four “option” card slots. Depending on
the requirements of the site, up to three 938 OPS cards can be
installed. In addition, one 915 Recorder/Announcer card or one
916 DTMF Receiver and Recorder/Announcer card can also be
installed. Each 938 card provides eight OPS ports supporting the
connection of eight DTMF-dial analog telephones or loop start
trunk ports of a key system. These OPS ports meet the technical
requirements for off-premise stations, including 20Hz ringing,
disconnect signaling, and standard progress tones. The 915
Recorder/Announcer card enables the recording of two separate
voice announcements of up to 20 seconds in length. The 916
DTMF Receiver and Recorder/Announcer card provides 24 DTMF
DNIS receiver “bins” as well as two separate 20-second voice
announcements. A software-based DNIS “match table,” created
during installation, provides sophisticated call routing options,
especially for DID applications.
The System 920 provides communication for all 24 channels
supplied by the network-T1 circuit. The channels can be
configured for any combination of inbound, outbound, or twoway
(including two-way DID).
When in transfer mode, the System 920 takes control of the
T1 circuit allowing incoming calls can be directed to:
• On-site analog telephones, either individually or in an ACD
group. Calls received by one telephone can easily be put on
hold or routed to another telephone using standard switchhook
flash conventions.
• An off-site telephone number, with or without an
intermediate voice message.
• A voice message, which provides the calling party with
prerecorded information.
For increased flexibility, the on-site analog telephones can be
used as a supplementary internal phone system on a day-to-day
basis. On-site personnel can use these phones to make outgoing
calls whenever the System 920 is controlling the T1 facilities.
A flexible, menu-driven software configuration system allows
support personnel to customize System 920 operation. Configurable
parameters include inbound call routing, outbound calling
access, security, and ACD operation. The menu system also
provides a real-time view of the unit’s operating status.
The System 920 is powered by –48Vdc. In most applications,
either the Gordon Kapes, Inc. Model 732 or Model 734 DC Power
Supply with Battery Back-Up is recommended. As the System
920 uses low-power circuitry, extended operating time from the
UPS can be expected. The System 920 is FCC registered
PFT for T1

UT-16 Universal Transfer Unit
Overview
The UT-16 Universal Transfer Unit is a general-purpose switching device for use with telephone, data, and low-power AC or DC signals. The unit is arranged as 16 two-wire circuits. Each circuit has an input, a normal output, and a transfer output. The two wires of each circuit are designated as tip and ring, reflecting the telephony orientation of the UT-16.

The UT-16 serves as a useful building block for special applications. Up to 16 two-wire input pairs can be switched between the normal and the transfer outputs. The switching is done "metallically" using electromechanical relays. This method provides excellent AC and DC isolation between connected and unconnected circuits.

In a typical application the UT-16 is installed with two-wire telephone circuits such as loop or ground start trunks, auto ring-down circuits, and private lines. Data lines that do not require special shielding can be switched by the UT-16. The UT-16 can also be considered as a "giant" A/B switch, with 32 individual inputs connecting to 32 normal and transfer outputs.

Two transfer control lines (one contact input and one logic input) allow external signals to place the UT-16 in the transfer mode.

A unique circuit provides a time delay between the restoration of power (or a transfer control line's return to the normal state) and the 16 circuits returning to the non-transfer mode. The timer, adjustable from 1 to 15 minutes, ensures that the associated equipment has reset completely prior to the UT-16 leaving the transfer mode.

An isolated relay contact is available for installer-selected applications. The contact changes state whenever the UT-16 is in the transfer mode.

The unit can be powered by 24 Vac, –24 Vdc, or –48 Vdc. The UT-16 automatically adjusts for the power that is connected; there are no switches to set or straps to cut.

Connections are made using one standard 25-pair plug and a terminal strip. LED indicator lights display operating status. The wall-mounted unit weighs less than two pounds. The UT-16 is FCC registered.
